Hi there, I'm Sara (pronounced SAH-ruh)
I have been making photographs for as long as I can remember. When I was growing up, my mom was an avid amateur fine art and documentary photographer. When my own photographic journey began, I realized that she had taught me the beauty and healing power of photography. I have now been shooting digitally for a couple decades, growing as an artist through personal photographic projects that chronicled my daily life as an adventurer, international volunteer, outdoor enthusiast, scientist, wife, and mother. I have also used my photography to help navigate great loss in my life. I am currently exploring several personal projects that explore time and how it has allowed my perspective to evolve. I hope to share in the near future.
In May 2024, I completed my Master’s in Fisheries and Aquatic Science at the University of Florida. My graduate project entailed creating an educational resource, Fishucation, which is an open and accessible online learning tool focused on Ichthyology. It is designed as an educational program that can bridge the knowledge gap between the scientific community and the general public. Using a variety of presentation methods, the user can navigate educational modules designed to pique interest in fish biology and physiology, and can learn about some of the more fascinating and lesser known aspects on a platform that is easily accessible by anyone interested. I was attracted to the idea both because of the topic and its capacity to involve the greater community, as well as the prospect of the longevity of the project. I believe education is a lifelong endeavor and I am committed to continuing my own personal journey as well as igniting curiosity in those around me. As a lifelong student and a homeschool educator, I know for certain that part of my life's journey is to organize and share information in a creative way. I anticipate that as I grow and change, so will Fishucation progress and adapt to suit the needs of those engaging with it.
I currently reside in Williamsburg, VA, with my husband, Tyrel, and our three children, Ilana Camille (14), Oran (12), and Autumn (11). You can often find us exploring the great outdoors - hiking in the woods, rafting along a river, hot air ballooning, caving, or camping in a forest or by a beach.
